Mafatlal Industries: 120 Years of Impacting Lives and Driving Growth

Few companies in India can proudly claim a history that spans over a century, shaping not only industries but also the lives of millions of people. Mafatlal Industries Limited (MIL), the textile arm of the Arvind Mafatlal Group, has completed 120 years of its remarkable journey, making it one of India’s most iconic and enduring business enterprises. Established in 1905 by Mr. Mafatlal Gagalbhai, the company began as a pioneering textile mill and has since evolved into a diversified enterprise with interests in textiles, technical textiles, consumer durables, health and hygiene products, and digital infrastructure. Through every era, MIL has been guided by integrity, trust, and purpose—values that remain the cornerstone of its growth and legacy.

Progress Woven Through Generations

MIL’s foundation was strengthened by the visionary leadership of Mr. Arvind Mafatlal, who took charge in 1954 and guided the company through decades of transformation. From powering India’s textile revolution to venturing into chemicals, petrochemicals, consumer goods, and education technology, Mafatlal Industries has consistently mirrored the evolving aspirations of the nation.

Today, the company is widely recognized for its product-agnostic business model, which allows it to adapt to changing markets while staying true to its purpose. From uniforms and fabrics to health products and digital solutions, MIL continues to impact lives at scale, proving that growth is not merely about numbers, but about the positive ripple effect created in society.

A Diverse and Purpose-Led Portfolio

Textiles and Uniforms

Mafatlal Industries remains a leader in the school and corporate uniform segment, offering high-quality fabrics and ready-made garments for institutions, public sector undertakings, and large corporates. The company’s ability to deliver at scale through its pan-India network has positioned it as a trusted partner for government and institutional requirements.

In fabrics, MIL caters to semi-urban and rural markets through its woven white and Rubia lines, while the polyester-cotton segment specifically addresses the needs of Tier II and Tier III regions. The company also exports voile fabrics to the Middle East, extending its global presence.

Technical Textiles and Hygiene Products

MIL has expanded into technical textiles, producing nonwoven fabrics used in sanitary napkins, baby diapers, and adult diapers. These affordable and high-quality hygiene solutions reflect the company’s commitment to improving well-being and dignity across diverse consumer groups, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Consumer Durables and Digital Infrastructure

In recent years, Mafatlal has forayed into consumer durables and digital infrastructure, with a focus on education technology. Leveraging its deep institutional relationships, the company has been able to deliver tech-enabled educational solutions to schools, creating meaningful impact in classrooms across India. This expansion underscores MIL’s agility in responding to the shifting dynamics of a modern economy.

Strategic Partnerships and National Impact

MIL’s role goes far beyond business. The company has been a vital partner in government welfare programs, supplying essential goods and solutions to support initiatives in education, social empowerment, and healthcare. Its products have reached classrooms, anganwadi centers, hospitals, and factories across India—creating a lasting social footprint.

The company has also built strong B2B and institutional partnerships, supplying uniforms, workwear, and hygiene products to leading corporates and government departments. Its ability to execute large-scale institutional orders with reliability and efficiency has reinforced its reputation as a trusted partner in both public and private sectors.

Legacy Beyond Longevity

Reflecting on the milestone, Mr. Priyavrata H. Mafatlal, Managing Director, observed: “This year, Mafatlal Industries Limited completes 120 years, a distinction held by very few Indian institutions. For us, this is more than an anniversary. It is a moment to honor a journey shaped not only by time, but by meaningful contributions to India’s social and economic fabric. Through every turn in history, three things have remained unchanged: our intent, our values, and our DNA.”

Indeed, MIL’s history is not just a sequence of business achievements but a narrative of national significance. From supplying textiles during India’s industrialization and freedom movement to supporting the Army, railways, hospitals, and schools, Mafatlal’s products have embodied dignity, discipline, and safety for generations.

The year 2024-25 was marked by strong financial performance despite global uncertainties. MIL reported a Total Income of ₹2,845.3 crore, a 33% increase over the previous year. EBITDA stood at ₹106.53 crore and Net Profit at ₹98.14 crore, reflecting operational discipline and prudent financial management.

This growth was broad-based, supported by robust demand for uniforms and fabrics, and strengthened by the successful execution of one of the largest institutional orders in the company’s history. The scale and precision of delivery reinforced MIL’s credibility and deepened trust with institutional partners, further strengthening its leadership position in the textile and allied industries.

Diversity Woven with Intent

A defining feature of Mafatlal Industries’ journey has been its transition from a product-led to a purpose-driven enterprise. Its asset-light, product-agnostic business model enables the company to remain nimble, outsource non-core functions, and focus on design, curation, and last-mile delivery.

This strategy has allowed MIL to expand across sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure, while maintaining efficiency and relevance. The result is a portfolio that balances breadth with clarity, ensuring long-term stability, public funding support, and the opportunity to deliver meaningful value at scale.

Looking Ahead: Growth with Responsibility

As it enters the next phase of its journey, Mafatlal Industries is determined to deepen its impact across sectors. The company’s future strategy is anchored in three pillars—

  1. Scaling core businesses like uniforms, fabrics, and hygiene products.
  2. Expanding into high-impact segments such as digital infrastructure for education and consumer durables.
  3. Strengthening partnerships with government and institutions to remain a trusted enabler of national development.

Echoing this vision, Mr. Mafatlal remarked: “Our legacy offers us both guidance and grounding. It reminds us that scale holds no value without purpose, and that progress is hollow if it does not reach those who need it most. Growth, for us, is never just a metric. It is a responsibility.”

The story of Mafatlal Industries is one of continuity and change—a company that has stayed rooted in values while evolving with the times. Over the past 120 years, it has touched countless lives, strengthened institutions, supported national priorities, and consistently adapted to meet the needs of a dynamic India.

As it celebrates this extraordinary milestone, MIL remains committed to its guiding theme: “Impacting Lives. Driving Growth.” With a renewed focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation, Mafatlal Industries is poised not just to continue its legacy, but to redefine it for generations to come.
